Well Dr. Bramwell, I suggest you take up cycling if you live in Europe.
I regularly commute 52 miles a day for my new job by bicycle. As I look at my fellow Americans, high end carbon bikes have a 250 lb weight limit, sadly most can’t even sit on a bicycle without crushing it. And pedaling it? However, technology to the rescue, we now have motors on bicycles.
Seriously Dr Bramwell, I observe on Wisconsin bike trails that more than half the cyclists have e-bikes. So now you can be obese and still ride a bike.
In Europe the e-bike law limits speeds to 15 miles per hour or a 250 watt motor. Any fit rider on a performance bicycle can easily exceed 15 mph.
Next question why does an e-bike cost 5000 dollars or more? Seriously, I can buy a 450 cc Honda motorcycle for 6000 dollars with a water cooled engine that gets 90 mpg and will run 200000 miles.
Next, the problem of e-bike battery fires. Go over to YouTube and watch an e-bike fire video. Wow! Cheap China batteries.
You really have to wonder about city planners that put barricades around neighborhoods so that not even ambulances can get through. You know people in opposition would have mentioned it - it's a problem that's obvious at first glance.
What's kind of surprising is that the barricades came down after some people presumably had some horrible medical outcomes after having to be carried by hand 1/4 mile to the nearest ambulance after having a heart attack. That kind of planning usually implies a centralized communist structure that totally doesn't care...

Actually I also cycle, although I live in New Zealand. I haven't had a car since I retired in 2010.
Dr. Bramwell, you should post about your car free lifestyle in New Zealand.
My car free life style in America? A drive to the bike trail. A ride on any American road on a bicycle? A death wish. LOL
However, not opposed to dragging a motorist out of their car for some well deserved male aggression. LOL
However, I do not advocate for violence against any road user.
